Wildlife To Spot On Shetland Walking Holidays

One of the many reasons that people choose to visit Shetland is to see the abundance of wildlife that can be found here.

Although we’re all on lockdown at the moment and walking holidays in Shetland are not on the agenda right now, it’s important to remember that the current situation can’t last forever and the beautiful Scottish countryside will still be here waiting for you when you are finally allowed to come and see it once again.

And there’s nothing to stop you from planning your next trip to this wonderful part of the world, is there? One of the many reasons that people choose to visit Shetland is to see the abundance of wildlife that can be found here and you’ll have a great time walking the hills and dales, looking for it all.

Following the coastline would be a wise move if you want to see as much marine life as you can – and you’re able to see common and grey seals here without any trouble at all. You may even be able to hear them singing on the beach from your B&B!

You’ll also be able to see otters near the sea and they’re easiest to find on low-lying shores near streams, since they get the majority of their food from the sea itself. Exercise a bit of patience, however, since otters can be quite shy.

Harbour porpoises are also very much in evidence here, although their numbers have been depleted somewhat because of modern fishing nets and food shortages. Visit in mid to late summer for the best chances of spotting them.

You may even be lucky enough to see some killer whales between May and August as they come close to the shore sometimes to hunt seals… but we can’t make any promises in this regard!
