If you are planning a walking holiday in Orkney you need to consider how you are going to get there.
One of Orkney’s greatest assets is its far-flung nature. Being so far away from the UK mainland can make you feel like you are about the fall off the edge of the world, and this is why so many people come here to get away from it all.
That does mean however, that getting here can be tricky. There are two main options however, air and ferry.
Air
You can get an aeroplane from Glasgow (60 minutes), Edinburgh (60 minutes), Inverness (45 minutes), Aberdeen (50 minutes) and Shetland (35 minutes). There is one small airport on Orkney, in fact it is so small you will see it has to rearrange itself from an arrivals terminal to a departures one and back again on any given day.
Ferry
If you want to bring your car you will need to get one of the car ferries from Aberdeen, Scrabster or Gills Bay or, if you are happy going over with no car, the passenger ferry from John O’Groats which runs in the summer. You can get the bus or the train to Aberdeen or Thurso.
Sail
Of course, for the adventurous among you would be able to sail to Orkney. Obviously this is only for the very experienced sailor but if this is an option for you it could be a trip of a lifetime to arrive on this island by boat.
