Scottish Seaside Towns And Villages To Visit

If you’re missing being close to the sea, and crowded beaches are not your cup of tea, then you should consider the incredible coastline of Scotland,

The UK’s beach resorts have been flooded with day-trippers and holidaymakers trying to make the best of their staycations during the pandemic, and unable or unwilling to travel abroad for their annual holidays.

But if you’re missing being close to the sea, and crowded beaches are not your cup of tea, then you should consider the incredible coastline of Scotland, such as the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. There many picturesque seaside towns and villages all around the Scottish coast, and here are a few of our favourites.

Portnahaven, Islay

Portnahaven, on Islay in the Inner Hebrides, was built in the 19th century and was originally inhabited by fishermen and crofters. Many of those fishermen’s cottages have now been converted into holiday homes in this scenic little village. There’s a lighthouse and a church to visit, as well as the harbour where grey seals can be seen sunbathing on the rocks. A quaint pub is down by the harbour, a must for great food and drink.

Crovie, Aberdeenshire

This tiny village on the North East Coast consists of only a single row of houses. The village of Crovie is so small, cars have to be left on its perimeter. As with Portnahaven, the fishermen’s cottages have now been converted into holiday homes in the best-preserved fishing village in Europe, and also boasts the narrowest space between shore and cliff of any Scottish village. To the east lies an RSPB reverse where thousands of birds can be spotted.

Plockton, Wester Ross

On the shores of Loch Carron lies the small village of Plockton. The village, picturesque in itself, is surrounded by stunning and rugged Highland scenery. It boasts a fantastic selection of hotels, B&Bs, and restaurants. It’s ideal for those more activity minded, with offerings including sailing, sea kayaking, and cycling, as well as a lovely stroll around the shops. Nearby is Attadale Gardens, which features 20 acres of peaceful gardens.

North Berwick, East Lothian

Just over half an hour away from Edinburgh, North Berwick is the perfect season escape away from the bustle of Scotland’s capital. The quaint town has much to do and see, including boat trips, walking trails, and plentiful wildlife to spot. It also has two sandy beaches, a good selection of pubs and restaurants, as well as two golf courses, and a castle at the top of a cliff to explore.

Crail, Fife

This gorgeous seaside village in the East Neuk has buildings you can see that date back to the 17th to 19th centuries. The cobbled streets will lead you down to the harbour where you can enjoy fresh, locally caught seafood at the Lobster Hut. Crail is packed with history, such as the Tollbooth and its tower which date back as far as the 1600s. There are two golf courses that visitors can play a round on, or you can walk a stretch of the 56 mile Fife Coastal Path.
